I read that Rolex is 90% owned by a charitable trust so does that mean 90% of the purchase price can be treated as a donation for gift aid purposes??

Our daughter has just replaced her Apple Watch with a new one because the old one suffered a huge failure. Too pricey for how much I would use it - and who wants a reminder of how time flies when you’re nearly 85?
-
The Apple watch is a nice piece of kit, but I’ve looked at them multiple times (always visit the Apple store when I pass) and always come to that conclusion. I’d only really use it for telling the time and maybe tracking calories burnt, so I’d be wasting the vast majority of the features. Plus, I like my mechanical watches too much!

Found a great deal online to buy a Tudor Black Bay Bronze (had my eye on one for ages) for 25% off RRP. Sadly they ran out of stock some time between me ordering and them shipping so as a gesture they said I could have ANY Tudor up to the non-discounted RRP of the Bronze watch, for the discounted price!
Ummed and ahhed but decided to just have my money back. Kind of regretting it now!!! I could have had a Tudor GMT new for cheaper than the cheapest used one ... but would have only been buying it as an investment not because I really like it, which I thought was the wrong thing to do. I do wonder whether I took them up on the offer and immediately sold the watch on as a brand new in box piece I could have made a profit, but not worth the risk at the moment IMO. -
I don’t know about Tudor but Rolex hold on to the guarantee card for a year to prevent people flipping them for a profit (they are worth less with no guarantee). Tudor are the same company so they may do the same on their popular models. I have always liked the BB bronze.
-
I’d heard of Rolex holding on to warranty cards but not Tudor, guess it makes sense that they would do the same thing.
There is a new BB bronze now which has a black dial and bezel, I guess why the bronze was on sale as it was end of line. I preferred the brown one but the black is nice too. I also like the blue special edition one! -
I have used Rolex submariner but need its strap replaced, is there anyone who recommends watch repair shop where i can get it replaced.
-
If you want the metal bracelet I’d go back to Rolex for a proper one. For leather straps I can recommend WatchObsession.
-
Ah yes that’s a lovely one. I never noticed the tip of the second hand was green as well until just now!!

I bought an aerosol can of white grease today - I don't think the door hinges and door stop mechanism has ever been lubricated since new - I lubricated the front doors in the shop car park, it was fine doors much better.
As I was on the way to pick up my wife from the hairdressers, I put the can in the boot and carried on.
When I got home, I decided to do all the hinges with grease but the can would not work.
I have tried taking the nozzle off and opening the valve at the top but still nothing comes out.
So, doe's anyone have any ideas on how to unblock it? -
When it comes to watches, there's a wide array of choices to suit different tastes and needs. It's not just about telling time; watches can be a statement piece, reflecting your style and personality.

I have a collection of about 40 watches. They range from Omega's to top of the range Seiko's, Amadeus, Citizen but to mention a few.
However there is one watch I do not have but it belongs to me.
The King Hussain of Jordan had his UK residence on our patch and every year we used to escort him to the Farnborough air show which in itself was a bloody good day out for us as we got access to many areas that the public didn't.
Anyway, this particular year we escorted him home and we were invited to have a break over a glass of lemonade and as we were chatting Hussain came round all of us individually shook our hand and handed us a Rolex marked box.
Inside was a top of the range Rolex personally engraved to us as a thank you. We were in possession for a few seconds before our ACC ordered us to hand them over as we (back then) were not allowed to accept or keep gifts. Our watches (and there were 12 of us on the SEG) were taken to HQ and put on display and they remain in the museum to this day.
When I retired I asked for my watch back but this was declined and I could not argue the point because it was part of my conditions of service when I joined the job.
Conversely, my brother in law ended up as a Sgt on the diplomatic protection group and he was required to look after the Sultan of Oman.
At the end of the tour he was given a silver coloured salver with a load of those expensive chocolates. He was told to keep the salver. The salver was solid silver which he only realised once the chocolates had been eaten. He tried to return it to the Sultan but he was told that would be considered an insult so he had to keep it and the rules for accepting gifts had changed and he was allowed to keep it.
The salver was valued at around £40,000.
Suffice to say it was sold and it paid the deposit on their new house
Times changed very quickly as coppers can now even have a second job.... -
@TC1474
Very interesting stories there!!!! Thanks for sharing
I know of someone who worked on an F1 support team, they were one of the people who were seen in the pits on TV during the races
The money thrown around there was insane. They were all required to wear an expensive watch from a particular brand due to sponsorship and one time this person forgot theirs...when they mentioned popping back to their hotel room to get it they were told there was no time and handed another one to put on which they were never asked to return
Another time were given an invitation to an extremely opulent party in Australia and the invitation itself came with a keyring with a solid gold chunk in the shape of Australia ... it would have been worth several hundred pounds just in melt value
Because this was private industry they WERE allowed to keep stuff!! -
Came across this from Jacobs at the price of $678,000+.

That company make some crazy pieces and I sometimes wonder if they are taking the mick?
