Hello,
Yesterday I called a company to have my car (non-runner) scrapped.
To cut a long story short – a price was agreed beforehand on phone and when they arrived they said it wasn’t worth that - that it was actually worth nothing and that I had to pay for a call out charge.
I was flabbergasted and shocked.
In the end, a price was negotiated, very low and I didn’t pay a call out charge.
I gave the keys and car log book and signed section 9 as did they which I believe I have to send to DVLA.
However, I am a little concerned as though they said they would scrap the car they didn’t say anything about a scrappage certificate. They have signed and put their company name in section 9 but no VAT number. Ive looked up the postcode and it is a house/residential.
Should I be concerned?
Of course I will send the section 9 section to DVLA but what about any scrappage certificates if any are required?

I suggest that you get in touch with DVLA straight away. The onus is on you to scrap a vehicle properly as you would know if you had read this page https://www.gov.uk/scrapped-and-written-off-vehicles.

Where you can scrap your vehicle
Find an authorised treatment facility (ATF) where your vehicle can be scrapped.

When the ATF has your vehicle, they can decide to:

completely scrap it
repair and sell it themselves

It’s illegal to scrap your vehicle anywhere else.

You didn’t scrap it. You sold it to someone else. Just pass their details on to the DVLA. Do it online. Now. https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

I thought that I was scrapping it properly - I called a scrap car company.
Im concerned now.
I have tried calling an 0300 number for DVLA and there isn't an option for scrapping cars - I think I need to speak with someone to inform them - I have the section 9 to post but I would prefer to talk to a DVLA representative for peace of mind.
I cant see a telephone number apart from an 0300 number which ive tried and which offers a menu of options....

thanks Motman - im just extremely worried as I was under the impression that it was going to be scrapped and honestly that's what I thought - I shall send the section of the form to the DVLA - or would it be best to do it online?

will the DVLA send me confirmation that I am no longer liable/linked to the vehicle?
When I do this online should I then destroy the section that I have - the paper one - section 9?
I was under the impression that the car would be totally scrapped but if they repair it then that's fine too - as long as it's all legitimate.

Well, if you’ve not taken it personally to a scrap yard and received documentation and the person you sold it too has not offered any certification, you’ve sold it. Just get the idea of scrapping it out of your head. What the new buyer does with it is his problem now, not yours. Notify the DVLA online and you should get some kind of confirmation that it is out of your hands. You will get a road tax refund if there’s at last one full month left on it.

I have to agree and offer my many thanks those who have helped me on this forum especially Motsman – these guys have reacted so quickly and have provided much needed advice and information and I am very grateful.

I expect that you will not hear any more about this car. The new owner may strip it for spares and scrap it themselves, or they may do it up and sell it on. Either way, your connection is effectively severed as soon as DVLA acknowledge that you are no longer the owner.

Edit - you should make sure that you get that acknowledgment from DVLA and be sure to file it away in case you need it at some point in the future.

Just to give you all an update and thank you for your help.
I have received notification from DVLA that the vehicle has been transferred to new owner and I have no links to it.

Agreed - thank you.

Now, if the new owner has failed to register himself and gets caught out by a roadside camera, the NIP will not come to you. If one does, and it happens, you can return it with a copy of your certificate.

I know this is an old thread, but the worry about your car not actually being scrapped is still a big deal for people. I’ve been there too and it’s hard to know who to trust.


Just wanted to say, if anyone’s in the same boat, I’ve used Scrap My Car Company and they were totally upfront about everything. They explained exactly what would happen with the car and made sure I had all the right paperwork sorted.

Would recommend them if you're in Hertfordshire or the surrounding areas.
