Hi,

I've been doing some practice in my car before my driving test, with my parents. I bought magnetic L plates and they flew off my car and broke. It is a new car, so I don't want to start sticking adhesives to it. I resorted to driving without L plates and put them in my glovebox, and my mum said if the police asked, just tell them what happened, it broke and flew off. Have two different sets and none of them stick.

However, I feel like I'm doing something illegal, even though my car is comprehensively insured and I did try my best to make the L plates stick.

Any advice or opinions?

I passed my test last month and used the fully magnetized L Plates from Halfords, but still had to use tape because they fell off over 60mph. I'd use tape if I were you. It's not worth the hassle if you're caught without.

You are right, it is illegal. Penalty is a fine and 3 to 6 points on your licence (or even a ban, though unlikely) so it's not worth the risk. "It fell off, officer" is no defence!

The plates vary in quality, the best magnetic ones have the entire back surface magnetised rather than just round the edges. If you stick them on with tape it won't do any harm so long as you change the tape every week or two and remove any sticky residue.

Either buy the stick on ones or fit magnetic ones and maybe tape them on.


In the glovebox is not an excuse that will work.
L plates are to be displayed not out anywhere else.

As such you commit the offence.

Just get stick-on ones. They wouldn't make adhesive L plates that will damage your paintwork when removed.

It clearly says "Easily removed when you pass your test".

If it's a new car and the paint comes off when you remove them, take it back to the dealer as there's something clearly wrong!

I used Gripper Mats by Proper Design. They are purpose made for holding magnetic or sticker L plates on and never let me down.

I am a great believer in neodynium magnets, and you can pick them up from that well-known auction site cheap enough. After passing Test, they can be used for a multitude of other tasks.
