Not sure on that one Tenpinn, but I thought you had to have held a full license for 3 years, and bear in mind, you are the responsible person in the car.
Cheers, Smudger.
PS. You can hire a "duel controlled car", which would be safer for you both, as you can take control of the car, and stop it in an emergency. -
Yep you must be over 21 and have held a full licence for 3 years. And obviously the learner driver will need to insured on the vehicle.

just phoned police you have to be over 21 have a licence for over 3 years and have L plates but to insurance they told me to ask insurance company so will have todo that tomorrow.

Talked to insurance company and all they could tell me is im not insured to drive her car under my insurance due to being under 25, does anyone have any idea of who to talk to who will be able to give me a answer as to if i need to be insured when she is driving her car. Going to give DVLA a try and if that fails then will try to find a traffic cop.

Ok,
what you need to supervise is..
21 years old
full licence for at least 3 years
Driver must have..
provisional driving licence for a car
insurance for the car they are driving
L Plates on the car
a supervising passenger (see above)
It can be useful (but not essential) to get the supervising driver insured (to help out if they get into a difficult situation), the driver needs to contact their insurance company and ask for you to be added as a named driver to their policy. -
Thankyou for this, can i ask where did you find the information? DVLA no help, at end of day my main concern is being pulled over and police turning round and saying you shouldn't be driving without insurance. -
I'm just full of useful information :) (and I'm an instructor)
the info can be found here
Just so it's clear, if you are supervising, you don't need insurance, it's the driver that needs insurance.
However, if you are going to drive the car on the road, even only for a second you will also need to be covered by insurance.
Hope I've helped

Yeah you have helped thank you, i was just curious if was legal requirement to have insurance as you may get into the instance where you have to drive the car or pull over and phone for someone else to come out and drive the car.

Hi, if the learner driver is caught speeding or commits any other affence, who takes the points, fine and slap on the wrist?
Thanks -
The person driving takes the punishment. It doesn't matter if they are a learner driver, the fine/points still go to them.

To sit in the passenger seat while a learner drives, most regions require that the accompanying driver be over 21 and have held a full driving license for at least 3 years. L plates must be displayed, and insurance coverage is important—contacting your insurance provider is the safest way to confirm if your fully comprehensive policy covers supervising a learner.
Many learners benefit from dual-controlled driving lessons, which offer extra safety since the instructor can intervene if needed. In Ticino, professional guidance like the programs offered at Scuola Guida Keller(https://scuolaguidakeller.ch/) can be really helpful, as they walk both learners and supervisors through legal requirements, safety practices, and real driving scenarios. This approach gives both confidence and ensures compliance with local regulations.
Having sat with a learner myself, clear communication and understanding your responsibilities as the supervising driver make a big difference being alert, calm, and ready to guide can prevent most stressful situations.
