Road User Groups

While there are User groups for just about every stretch of Railway in the UK, there don't appear to be any Pressure / User Groups for Road Users that are specified to certain roads, ie main A Roads, Motorways etc. At least I've not been able to Google any. Are there any? The number of times I've grumbled about the state of certain roads I regularly commute along, I'm beginning to wish there was.

I think the answer to that is because rail travellers who use a stretch of line between two particular destinations are all committed to using that line. This means that a large specific group, many of whom actually meet during the train journey, have an opportunity to form a group, and to elect spokespersons for it.

In the case of roads and where the private motorist is concerned, very few drivers have cause to meet up, and then only as odd ones with no means to form a group; and many drivers do not habitually travel the same roads on a daily basis.
Aren't those responsible for the roads lucky!:D

    Hi, Wild Weasel.

I know others call those who live on Mull oddballs (well often more impolite terms) and it's very much easier for us being an island, but we have Keep Mull Moving. We have extremely serious road issues (farmers can't get feed for their stock and the fire engine cannot travel on certain roads, plus the roads are patched-up potholes - or were, read on) and KMM is a sub-group of the Community Council. Mull has the worst roads in Argyll & Bute and Argyll & Bute has the worst roads in Scotland.

We have succeeded in getting 000's of work done by sheer determination and threats of legal action and by getting our MP and MSPs on board; it's even been mentioned in Europe, though no funding. If the work hadn't been started, don't kid yourself, we'd have been raising hell over there, too.

There is a group for the A82 - there was a big petition not that long ago for it's upgrade - if you don't know it, it's the only trunk road in Europe that has a single track section ! There's also a group, though I think it's mainly historical, for the A1.

I'm guessing you're south of the border, so that makes life a bit more awkward. If you're talking m-ways and trunk roads, you have the Highways Agency - maybe AdamB can help you out as to who they liaise with at Council level?

If non- Highways Agency roads then it's whatever type of authority - County or Metropolitan etc. that need to be targeted and if it's over a long stretch involving several authorities, that's a logistical nightmare.

One way of doing it - albeit donkeys years ago - was using the local press to get folks riled up. It still works and of course we now have social networking sites - stick a thread on there and get people to discuss it. Then draw it to the attention of the media and local authorities.

No, I'm not an ex-GreenPeace worker - just worked in local authority and then, as now, you can panic them!

Snowball's arguments are very strong - maybe we were too b-minded (when you're livelihoods and homes are at stake, you get that way) and ignored the obstacles.

For anyone else who has genuine, big road problems in their wee patch of England, start with your Parish Council, get a resolution passed by them and keep plugging - that's all our Community Council is, after all.

Go for it and GOOD LUCK!

It feels like a lot of road repairs are short-term fixes that don’t last, and the same stretches end up being done again and again.

There should be more accountability so repairs are carried out to a standard that actually lasts, rather than becoming a cycle of repeat work.

A longer guarantee on roadworks would be a step towards making sure they’re done properly in the first place.
