Berlingo Tyre Wear

I have a new style Citreon Berlingo Multispace. 1.6D 58 plate.:)

But I have noticed that rear tyres are wearing on the outside. Passenger side is now illegal (all tread gone from the outside half of the tyre) after 22K miles and driver side is not far behind.

Mostly motorway driving, only occasionally heavily loaded.

I was expecting front tyres to wear fastest because of the front wheel drive, steering and engine weight, but this amount of rear tyre wear came as a shock.

I've looked at a few other Berlingos, both car and van version and this seems to be a common problem.

As it is a solid rear axle with no adjustment, it must be a design or manufacturing problem.

Has anyone else seen similar and what has been your experience with dealer and Citreon?

    Hi,

Has the vehicle been regularly serviced? any advisories on invoice?

Is what you notice, a part of the service where tyres are moved or rotated?

It may be a common issue with ths vehicle, As it is still under its warranty maybye you could visit your local Citroen Dealership and make some enquiries?

Then be the First to report back to all forum users of your findings.;)

    Berlingo tyre wear

I just bought a 2012 berlingo multispace with front tyres worn on the outside. Not till I was on Motorway did I find it pulled to the left.
Dealer verified tracking OK and replaced front tyres. Problem still there.
A local garage let me see them do the laser tracking check which they said was good. Problem still there.
I searched and found several forums reporting alignment/ steering pulling to left- to be common but not on all berlingos.
Road camber blamed in some posts with one claiming that no left pull experienced in a flat carpark.
I'm wondering if setting the tracking 0.5 degrees to the right will correct it for motorway driving where it will bother me on long drives, perhaps ?
Many said Citroen strongly deny any issues. But some suspect factory assembly problem, in some cases, as rear axle is bolted on.
Hope this helps anyone with this problem.

    Have you considered tyre pressures?
  • DpA1949's Avatar
    Hi smudger,
Yes I forgot to mention that the local garage verified that tyre pressure on all four as well as tracking where fine.
They didn't charge me as no adjustment was deemed necessary.
So, for now, its down to me experimenting with keeping nearer to road crown and see if his theory is correct.
I forgot to ask him if his car pulls to the left as his is set up correctly too ... ;-)

In the long term, its a learning curve for me as I get my head round all the angles and fully understand wheel alignment,
so as to cut through the BS till I know for sure what this is about.

There's some good videos on youtube.

@Tuby's Dad.. I have 2yr old Peuguet E rifter with same problem.. 3rd set of tyre rear on 2year old car. Wear is on outside of rear ns. Visable 10m away. Rear shoch changed at 11 months Dealers not keen. Have logged official Peuguet complaint and getting no where. I have to travel 140m to main dealer who says cannot adjust rear axle. Correct it is fixed. Then says waiting for week to find any UK dealer that can check. Week 3 of no action.

I have never heard of this on a rigid axle, and the only thing that makes any sense to me is 'maybe' crabbing. I would suggest a four=wheel alignment check. Local to me they cost around £55 - 60 in NW London suburbs.
