Brake fluid in Power Steering Resevoir

  • dale.aw's Avatar
    Hi,

I have a Ford Fiesta 2008 and have just noticed that I accidentally put about 250ml of DOT 4 brake fluid in the power steering reservoir.

I must have done this around 4/5 weeks ago and the power steering seems to be running fine, I have seen advice on some forums that the power steering reservoir should be flushed but considering all is running well after this period of time would this still be necessary?

    Thanks for any feedback

The problem with DOT4 is that it is corrosive and in the long term could possibly damage rubber seals in the power steering system. At the moment the DOT4 has been diluted by the power steering fluid so it may not be showing any signs yet.
I would empty the reservoir, fill with the correct fluid (it wont be much) then run it for a few minutes. Then repeat the process and that should dilute it to a much smaller level.
